The Ekana International Cricket Stadium, Lucknow, has favoured teams chasing scores this season, as evidenced by four out of six matches being won by the chasing team in IPL 2024. Nevertheless, this match defied expectations and marked a surprising departure from the trend. It was also the first time a landmark of 200 was breached by a team at the stadium.

The fixture started off with a bang, with the unlikely powerplay hero with the ball for the Lucknow Super Giants, getting top-edged and tickled for a boundary by Phil Salt to get the Kolkata Knights off to a forward-looking start to the match. Despite Salt departing for a quickfire 32 (14) in the fifth over, he had already set the stage for his side, with his opening partner, Sunil Narine, going all guns blazing at one end, and youngster, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, being the ideal candidate for accompanying the assertive southpaw. While the 18-year-old eased his way into the partnership, it was the Tobagoninan linchpin doing the bulk of the scoring, and at a rapid rate as well.

KKR had already reached 140 when Narine departed for a sensational 81-run knock off just 39 deliveries, remarkably his third-highest score of the current edition after his 109 and 85 which came against the Rajasthan Royals and the Delhi Capitals, respectively. After having a stage as grand as that set by the West Indian, skipper Shreyas Iyer demoted himself down the order. However, explosive hitters of the likes of Andre Russell and Rinku Singh couldn’t inflict much chaos on the carnage, departing for 12 and 16, respectively. A late blitz from Ramandeep Singh propelled KKR to a daunting total of 235/6, which was also the highest team total set by any IPL franchise in Lucknow. Every bowler other than leggie Ravi Bishnoi travelled at an economy of over 10.

Onto the chase, the LSG openers were nowhere near the prowess displayed by their counterparts, as skipper, KL Rahul, and Arshin Kulkarni, found it tough to get off the blocks courtesy of some disciplined bowling. Kulkarni, who copped a golden duck in LSG’s previous encounter against the Mumbai Indians, could only manage nine after being brought in as an Impact Player. Marcus Stoinis at No. 3 tried to step on the gas but couldn’t carry on after departing for a good-looking 36 off 21. It was a similar tale to the middle-order of the KKR, as that of LSG folded cheaply, just that they were never in with a chance as there were no big scores courtesy of their top-order batters.

Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, and Ashton Turner, could only muster 46 runs amongst themselves, as the hosts folded for 137, still having 3.5 overs in the bank which went unutilized. Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy chipped in with three wickets apiece, while the mainstays from the West Indies, Russell and Narine applied the brakes of the opposition by sharing three amongst themselves, with Narine being super-economical as always. The opening duo of Vaibhav Arora and Mitchell Starc were on the expensive side, but it wasn’t really consequential after KKR augmented yet another victory in their current campaign, this time by a hefty 98-run margin.
